Museum the New Llano Colony

Flora (Young) Campbell

Birth: She was born in 1913 in Bromley, England.

Family Information: Daughter of Sidney and Lilly Young.

Sister of Howard and Ivy Young.

She married George Campbell while living in the colony. Mother of a daughter born July 22, 1935 - "a lucky day according to numerology."

Pre-Colony History: Before coming to Newllano, the family had lived for a time at Welwyn Garden City, a co-operative community in England, though the Young family soon lost faith in that concern and felt that it had only been a scheme to enrich the Board of Directors, thus they made the decision to come to Newllano to live in 1930.

They came to America onboard the Niagara, docking at Galveston, Texas October 2, 1930 and listing George T. Pickett as their friend in the country.

Other Info:

She and all the members of her family were frequent performers in the colony theater productions -- they acted in "playlets", demonstrated folk-dancing, and offered a variety of musical performances. In addition to performing, they often created costumes, props, etc.

She was one of 16 girls who wound the broad ribbons round the Maypole at Llano's birthday party in 1932 (other dancers included Nellie (Kemp) Bradshaw, Laura (Synoground) Swenson, Ruth Shoemaker, Sylvia and Ruth Tuber, Verda Bradshaw, Hortense Self, Esta Caves, Helen Emry, Vivian Busick, Irene Hewitt, Myrtle and Irene Maki, Marguerite Killian, Iris Busick, Winnie (Ogden) Dougherty and Rhea Mae Baldwin.)

Post-Colony History: She left the colony in January 1936 with a canvas-covered load of furniture, going to California along with her husband, their two babies and her brother, Howard, and his wife.

The 1940 US Census shows her living in Inglewood, California with her husband and four children.

Death: Flora died in 1996 in Oklahoma City.
