The Llano Colonist was started in California and assumed very interesting proportions when the move was made to Louisiana and the Colonist was never revived. It is to replace the Colonist temporarily that this issue of the Vernon Parish Democrat will signal the reappearance of a weekly paper from the Llano Colony...

The Democrat was established to offset some startling and unfounded rumors prevalent about the Colony as a result of the ultra-patriotic war spirit in this parish when we first came from California. We have now overcome most of this ignorance, and the people of this district have learned that the Llano Co-operative Colony is intensely in earnest.

The print paper situation is such that it is impossible to procure a sufficient and continuous supply, and the price is so high, that it was not possible to revive the Llano Colonist at this time...

You can learn of the doings of this successful co-operative colony by reading the colony newspaper. As soon as the situation clears up, the Colonist will be revived, or the Democrat will die that the Colonist may live..."

"Colony News and Co-Operator Off the Press -- The monthly magazine, the Co-operator, has been incorporated with the Colony News (monthly) and is off the press now. It will be published regularly now, and will be an interesting magaizne.

First, the Western Comrade, published in California, was the Colony's champion of the cooperative idea. The move to Louisiana made the Comrade no longer "western" and the name was changed to The Internationalist. It reached the stage of being the best magazine in the field, printing 48 pages of new, live material, when an arbitrary postal ruling censored an issue and threw chaos into the wheels. The Co-operator was founded to take its place, but it never fully recovered from the postoffice blow.

The name Co-operator will still be carried in the magazine, but the name Colony News will stand for a while."

"Printing Dept. An Always Busy Institution -- Is Especially Equipped For Publication Printing, Including Pamphlets, Magazines, As Well As Regular Commercial Work -- Llano's Printing and Publishing Department is one of the always busy places in the Colony, as well as one of the most interesting. This department is under the supervision of DeForest Sanford, a printer and publisher of many years experience.

Llano Colony is the owner of two weekly publications which are published and printed in this plant, in addition to a great mass of literature in the way of pamphlets and booklets published from time to time.

The Gospel Messenger is an outside publication which is printed regularly in the Llano plant.

The building which houses the department is a two-story structure with approximately four thousand square feet of floor space. While much of the equipment is not modern, a good class of work is turned out. The printing equipment includes a large cylinder press, three smaller job presses, and a multicolor press. Two linotypes are required to turn out the type needed for the different publications.

In addition to the printing department proper, there is a very good binding department where considerable work is done for people on the outside. Edward Ranft is the chief binder, having had many years experience and turns out splendid work.

In connection with the plant also is a modern photo-engraving plant and art department. The various cuts used in the Colonist, the Colony official publication, during the past three years have been made in the local plant. Some very modern additional equipment has been installed recently, but not yet placed in service.

The printing plant is especially equipped for magazine, booklet and pamphlet work. As many as a dozen magazines have been under way at one time. Sad to state, this line of work was given up during the past year or so, but it is the intention of the management to resume that line of work.

Quite a few people are employed in the various departments in addition to those working directly at printing tasks. For instance, circulation managers for the different papers, those engaged in the mailing departments, bookkeeping, etc. Really a busy place. You are always welcome to come in and look through the plant. Somebody will be found to show you around."

"Printing Department Prepares For More Business -- Our Printing and Publishing Department is installing additional equipment for handling publication work such as Little Magazines, and Books and Pamphlets.

The Lee Cylinder Press... has been installed especially for this class of work, and this paper is now being printed on it.

This Piece of Equipment is one of which we are proud. It is the 'simplified cylinder press,' fast, accurate, weighs less than two and a half tons. Another much larger press is available when needed, though intended for larger jobs.
