Pre-Colony History: He came to the colony around March 1931 from Brownsville, Texas.  

Home in Colony: In December 1932 those living at the Isle of Cuba Plantation (near Thibodeaux, LA) included: Sam Hall, Harry Morgan, Henry and Bennie Frahm, Beldon Lewis, F. Gossett, John Horney, Roy McLean, Mrs. Swilley and Mr. and Mrs. Perkins with their four children.

By the end of the month, the group had added Mrs. Gossett, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shipman, Albert Wicks, Dolly McCullough, Jim Nash, Earl Swenson and Ranny Wells. 

Job in Colony: In May 1931 he, Long and Ike Jensen were attending to the power plant which kept all the machinery of the colony moving.

In June 1932 Tom Cunningham, with his powerful mules, and Horney and Mansfield helping, were grading around the sawmill which meant a nice level yard for the great number of logs they expected to bring there.

In July 1932 Cleve Campbell was glad to see Bartlett back on the saw mill construction work. Bartlett, Horney and Mansfield were at that point finishing the log skidways while Harry Layer and Rand were shooting across the mechanical parts.

In November 1932 he went to the Isle of Cuba plantation to help plant the sugar cane; in December 1932 he was listed as one of the Isle of Cuba (near Thibodeaux, LA) workers.

In May 1934 he caught a ride to the Rice Ranch with Mr. Baldwin so he could help with the pumping during the season.
